Canton Zug to cover a third of childcare costs

Zug cantonal government has announced that it will give parents a 33 percent flat rate contribution to help pay for childcare costs, starting in August 2026. 

Families in Zug to benefit from new childcare financial support

Families in canton Zug are set to get a little extra help from the government. The Zug cantonal government has announced in a press release that it will contribute 33 percent towards childcare costs for children in Swiss daycare facilities (Kitas) and children looked after by family support systems like childminders (Tagesfamilien).

Starting August 2026, parents or guardians will be able to claim the benefit for children over 3 months old living in Zug. Children must be in a daycare centre or looked after by a family daycare provider, and parents must be employed or enrolled in education or training.

Canton Zug to cover 33 percent of daycare costs

The financial aid will be paid in a lump sum to parents or guardians and will not be determined by income, i.e. a flat rate of 33 percent. Eligible applicants will be able to submit an application online via a platform a few weeks before the allowance is set to start.

The new measure will work alongside the childcare vouchers (Betreuungsgutscheine) already available in some municipalities in Zug.

The cost of childcare in Switzerland is among the most expensive in Europe. The new contribution in Zug aims to “provide financial relief to families and strengthen the compatibility of work and family life.” Zug is “positioning itself as a pioneer throughout Switzerland” by offering a flat rate for all eligible families.
